Breast Ultrasound Guided Biopsy

How do I prepare for the exam?
The patient should abstain from wearing powder, lotion and/or glitter in the area of the breast. The patient should refrain from taking aspirin or any anti-clotting/blood thinner medication for at least seven days prior to their appointment. It is highly suggested that the patient sends to our office all prior breast examinations including but not limited to breast MRIs, mammograms and ultrasounds, if any.

*** It is the patients´ responsibility to consult their referring physician before stopping any treatment or medication regimen, if any.

What should I expect during the exam?
A Breast Ultrasound guided biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed by one of our Board-Certified physicians on an outpatient basis. During the procedure the patient will have to lie down on the examination table and the breast will be placed on one of the table´s openings and held in position throughout out the time of the procedure. After local anesthetic has been injected into the breast the physician will proceed to extract a tissue sample guided by an ultrasound. After the sample has been extracted the patient will be allowed to recover for 20 minutes and then continue with normal activities while avoiding weight lifting for the rest of the day.

What should I expect after the exam?
All of our diagnostic examinations are interpreted by Board-Certified Radiologists. The results of your Breast Ultrasound Guided biopsy will be sent to your referring physician as soon as they are interpreted. It is the patients´ responsibility to contact their referring physician to discuss the results of their examination and ask for further recommendations. Patients should contact their referring physician in case they experience abnormal swelling, bleeding, fluid discharge, redness and/or a sensation of heat in the breast.
